OBIS aggregates species occurrence records from marine researchers worldwide under UNESCO's oceanographic commission, so it's the standard place to find where a given marine species has been recorded, not modeled or estimated. A marine ecology notebook can export occurrence data as CSV to ground claims about a species' range in real observation records. Records reflect where people have looked as much as where species live, so gaps on the map aren't proof of absence.
