CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System)

Psychology & social sciencefree

Transcripts and recordings of child-caregiver speech used in language-acquisition research. Transcript files upload as plain-text sources.

Part of the TalkBank project at Carnegie Mellon, CHILDES holds transcripts of real child-caregiver conversations that linguists have used for decades to study how children acquire language. Uploading actual transcripts gives a notebook primary data instead of a description of findings. Transcripts use CHAT-format annotation codes, so there's a small learning curve to reading them directly.

Survey and study sites often gate the raw dataset — the summary report or working-paper PDF is what actually imports as a source.
