European Social Survey

Psychology & social sciencefree

Two decades of cross-national survey data on European attitudes and values. Topline reports and questionnaires make good grounded sources; data is free.

ESS has asked the same questions across dozens of countries every two years since 2002, using one consistent methodology, which makes it a rare source for tracking how attitudes have shifted over time rather than comparing one-off polls. Data and questionnaires are free to use. It only covers Europe, so it won't answer questions about attitudes elsewhere.

Survey and study sites often gate the raw dataset — the summary report or working-paper PDF is what actually imports as a source.
