Run by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, bioRxiv is where much life-science research appears months before it clears peer review, useful for a notebook tracking a fast-moving research area in near real time. Because none of it has been reviewed yet, findings can be revised or superseded by a later published version, so it's worth checking whether one has since come out.

- FIFA Research ProgrammeFIFA's testing and research arm for pitches, balls and football technology. Its published standards and studies suit sports science notebooks.

- NASA Astrophysics Data SystemThe search engine astronomers actually use — millions of astronomy and physics papers. Most records link to arXiv or publisher full text you can import.
