Ensembl's gene summary pages are a tighter, more focused source than a general search when a notebook question is about one specific gene — variant data and cross-species comparisons are right there on the page. It covers vertebrates and standard model organisms well. The interface leans on bioinformatics notation, so some genetics background helps in reading it.
