Open records of where species have been observed worldwide — hundreds of millions of occurrences. Species and dataset pages cite the original surveys.
Every occurrence record in GBIF traces back to an original museum specimen, survey or citizen-science observation, so a notebook asking where a species has been recorded is grounded in verifiable underlying data rather than a summary map. Sampling effort is uneven across the world — dense in well-studied regions, sparse elsewhere — so an absence of records doesn't mean a species is absent there.
